2006 Top Ten Movies

03.06.2007

The Oscars are done, which means the 2006 movie year is over. And I’ve seen pretty much everything I’m really interested in seeing this year. There are a couple of stragglers that I believe will be pretty good, but I doubt they have any chance of crippling my passion for these ten movies.
Half Nelson

  1. Half Nelson
  2. So Goes the Nation
  3. Brick
  4. When the Levies Broke
  5. An Inconvenient Truth
  6. Who Killed the Electric Car
  7. Friends With Money
  8. Children of Men
  9. Fateless
  10. I Am a Sex Addict

4 straight-up documentaries on that list. That’s definitely a first. But, those are BIG documentaries. By which I mean that the subject matter is massive. The Earth, American Politics, an 8-hour New Orleans documentary, and the American auto industry. BIG shit to deal with. Each of these films taught me a lot and did it with passion and style. Much respect.
Half Nelson though, is the SHIT. Seriously. The story is just completely unlike anything I’ve ever seen. And music by Broken Social Scene! Brick is also the shiznit. Depending on the day, Brick may be #2. Those are 2 of the most original and well-executed movies I’ve seen in a LONG, LONG time.
Friends with Money completely took me by surprise. I was doing something else when Acacia started watching it, but by the time it was done, I was paying complete attention and loving every choice in it. Her other movies aren’t nearly as good, but I’d recommend Walking and Talking over Lovely and Amazing.
I think that’s all I have to say about that. Oh, honorable mention to Casino Royale, which I don’t feel particularly passionate about, but it sure was fun.
Other movie lists are here.
